PLAYING MEDIA OFF USB ON PS4 Here, I write for those who need assistance to play media off a USB on PS4. If your PS4 is not detecting any media off your USB drive, you may need to reformat your USB. This is for Mac users and for Windows users. Although these instructions will be given as Mac. To rewrite the USB, use Disk Utility under your Applications > Utilities, with whatever USB drive. (I don't use a hard drive but i assume it's no different) Once Disk Utility is opened, click on your drive on the sidebar, and providing you are running El Capitan OS, the 'Erase' should be listed at the top. Another window should appear, for rewriting your USB drive. Some hard drives are not formatted properly to work 'as is' in an external enclosure. On Mac, you can do that by hitting the erase button inside the Disk Utility app. Windows users need to right-click the drive in the “My Computer” window and select “format”. Backup your PS4’s saved data, settings and game files. Alright, let’s finally start with the upgrade. Majority of forums and video tutorials don't show the process of how the USB should be formatted, or if the USB is formatted and are mainly from Windows users. To rewrite the USB drive: • Click 'Erase'; another window should appear • Now, here is the part where people don't explain how the USB should be formatted, especially the lack of Mac users on here. You need to format the USB as MS-DOS (FAT), Microsoft Disk Operating System. The oldest format that all computers can read compared to newer formats from now. Others have recommended ExFAT or FAT32, but those formats are not available for me to format my USB with yet they have not worked for me when I'm reformatting on a Windows • Second, and most importantly, this is the MAIN part people don't cover. This is your partition map. I would explain but me personally I don't complete understand. The 'Scheme' needs to be Master Boot Record, another old scheme format.
You will see OS-X Journaled. DO NOT SELECT IT, as other computers such as Windows will not be able to read the files on your USB. SELECT MASTER BOOT RECORD • You should now be done. When moving files onto your drive, please note that the media needs to be contained within a folder (named anything). Your PS4 should now be able to read the files on your USB. Then you can format it. I found someone give details on how to do this but I got stuck with that person's instructions. May you please help? Here is what they said: Place the hard drive in the case per the instructions, then go into the PC Control center and select Administrative Tools, Computer Management, then Storage -Disk Management. Now insert the USB connector of the hard drive case into you PC and look for the hard drive with a bunch of sectors colored black. Right click on each one and pick delete volume. You'll see the blue 'Healthy Partition' increase in size. Keep doing this until you have only one large 500 gb partition. Click 'simple format' and follow directions. Make sure you let Windows assign a drive letter or you won't be able to access the drive.
